Beautification

The beautification and renovation of the common areas is ongoing. Many of the dead, diseased, and invasive trees have been cleared from the common area surrounding Lake Amoret. The cabbage palms were de-booted to reduce maintenance and give a cleaner appearance. The edge of the lake has also been mowed down. There is still much to be done to restore the park to its original beauty.

The original landscaping which was installed in the 1920's incorporated pines, exotic palms, vines, and many flowering shrubs. Highland Park developer Irwin A. Yarnell and his investors contributed a great deal of time and money into getting Highland Park off the ground.

In November 1920, the Lake Wales Highlander reported “Nearly $65,000 Expended during the Summer in the Beautifying of the Handsome Grounds.” The article goes on to say that “we were not prepared to see the wonderful improvement made at Highland Park during the last few months, as it looks as though Aladdin and his famous lamp had been working overtime at the Park during the summer months and late into the fall.”

Thanks to the work of Lita, our Village Clerk, we have received a grant for construction of a playground facility, along with accompanying landscaping, which will be installed at the edge of Lake Amoret.
