Highland Park is in the center of historic Imperial Polk County, so called because of its vast size, extensive recources and enterprise, and because of the supposedly "cosmopolitan character of its population." The phrase was coined around 1914 and has been used intermittently ever since.

There are many local attractions with historical signifigance. You can walk in the footsteps of President Calvin Coolidge by visiting Historic Bok Sanctuary or you can taste the soup that went to the moon on Apollo 15 at the Chalet Suzanne.

Other interesting attractions include the Lake Wales Depot Museum, the Lake Wales Arts Center, Spook Hill, and St. Anne's Shrine.
